Music

Intent

At Brampton Primary School, we aim to support all children in exploring music through singing and playing a range of instruments. Our children gain a firm understanding of what music is by listening, singing, playing, evaluating, and composing across a wide variety of musical genres. By sharing the features of different genres with our children, we enable them to reflect and build upon their personal music tastes and understand how music can be used to express themselves. We ensure that our children understand the importance of music in the wider community and are given the opportunity to involve themselves in music in a variety of contexts.

Implementation

In the classroom, our music curriculum ensures that children at Brampton Primary School are given as many opportunities as possible to learn a range of musical instruments. Each key stage focusses on a different instrument:

KS1 – Glockenspiel

Lower KS2 – Recorder

Upper KS2 – Ukulele

In addition to this, in Year 5, our children learn to play a wind instrument with a specialist music teacher.

Music is taught across each year group in units using Charanga Musical School. The scheme enables children to explore their own responses to music through discussion and sharing ideas using the key music vocabulary. Each unit introduces our children to a range of musicians and aims to build on prior learning. The interrelated dimensions of music weave through the units to encourage the development of musical skills as the learning progresses through listening and appraising, musical activities and performing.

At Brampton Primary, we also enjoy performing together during music clubs, weekly singing assemblies and various concerts with parents and our wider community.

Impact

Children are able to enjoy music through listening, composing and performing. They can sing and feel a pulse and they can also dissect music and comprehend its parts. Our children have access to a range of musical opportunities and this allows them to discover areas of strength, as well as areas they might like to build upon in the future.
