Year 3 – Mrs Woodward & Mrs Brooks

Welcome to Year 3 WB

Mrs Woodward and Mrs Brooks 2023-2024

Welcome back to Year 3! We hope that you all had a super break and we are really looking forward to a new school term full of exciting opportunities. Please find some important information about our class below.

In literacy, we start our new term reading ‘The Iron Man’ by Ted Hughes. We will be learning to write a narrative and an explanation letter. In our sentence accuracy work, we will be focussing on the use of conjunctions, including subordination, and the use of apostrophes for contraction and possession. We will be continuing our spelling work to learn new spelling patterns and prefixes. We will then be applying this to our writing.

In numeracy, we will be learning about multiplication and division using practical resources to support our calculations. Moving on to length and perimeter to finish the half-term. Our topic for this term is 'The UK'. In Geography, we are learning about famous human and physical landmarks throughout the UK. In science, we will be investigating ‘Forces and Magnetism’. Keep checking our class Dojo page for updates about our learning and amazing achievements.

Homework

Children in Year 3 should read aloud to an adult every night.  As well as daily reading, children must practise their spellings and timetables.  Each week, our spellings are available to practise online on Spelling Shed and children will be tested on them the following Monday morning.  In Year 3, children need to know the 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 and 10 times tables and it is vital that children regularly practise these.  Again, these can be practised online using Times Tables Rockstars. Children will also be assigned numeracy tasks to complete on Freckle that are linked to our weekly focus.

Links for Spelling Shed, TT Rockstars and Freckle are at the bottom of the page.

Reading diaries should be kept at home to record daily reading out of school, with a signature or a comment from someone the children are reading to or with. We will collect the reading diaries in each week and award Dojo points for effort with home reading and using the diaries well.

Login information for Spelling Shed, Times Tables Rock Stars and Freckle:

Please contact us on ClassDojo if your child can't remember their login information.

P.E.

Children will have P.E. on Monday and Friday afternoons and should bring their P.E kits to school at the start of every half term. Swimming will start during the Spring term every Wednesday afternoon.

P.E. kit - house team coloured t-shirt, black or blue shorts or tracksuit/jogging bottoms/leggings (in colder weather) and trainers or plimsolls.  No jewellery should be worn for safety reasons. Children who wear earrings must take them out for P.E. or tape them up.  Children should bring their own tape into school and must tape up their earrings themselves.

We will always aim to be outside for P.E. so please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather.  P.E. this half term, is Dance and Swmming.

Reminders:

  • Children should arrive at school at 8:45am.
  • We will finish school promptly at 3:15pm.
  • Children only need to bring a coat, a water bottle and a healthy snack to school (and obviously a packed lunch if needed) - please avoid bringing bags / pencil cases and any other unnecessary items.
  • Homework includes daily reading, a numeracy task and regular practise of spellings and times tables.

Our Class Dojo is a good channel of communication for you to reach us at any point should you need to.

In Year 3, and throughout school, we strive to help your child achieve their full potential in every area of school life and to this end we will all work hard to ensure this happens.  In return, we expect the children to apply themselves fully and success should follow.  Lots of effort in school, a positive attitude, plenty of water to drink and lots of sleep are needed.  Let’s make this year a really successful one!

Best Wishes

Mrs Harrison-Woodward and Mrs Brooks
