Year 6 - Miss Miller

Welcome to Miss Miller's Year 6 class

Welcome back everyone.

Year 6 will be taught by me for the majority of the week, with Mrs Doherty teaching each Thursday. We are supported in class by Mrs Watson and Mr Smith.

Our mornings consist of Maths and English lessons. This term we will begin mini maths projects to revise and apply our maths knowledge, and we will be working on a new text - The Ways of the Wolf by Smriti Halls, with particular focus on our grammar, punctuation and spelling skills. We are currently reading Pax by Sara Pennypacker, as voted for by Year 6.

In our topic lessons, we will be learning about earthquakes and volcanoes, our local area during WW2, maps and settlements. In science, we will be learning about the circulatory system. Please scroll down to find our curriculum on a page document for details of the rest of our planned learning.

Our PE days are every Tuesday and Wednesday - and the children should ensure their school PE kit is in school on these days. Kit can be left in school for up to a half term.

As a reminder, school P.E. kit includes a coloured T-shirt which represents the house your child belongs to, black or navy shorts (or tracksuit / jogging bottoms in colder weather) and trainers. No jewellery should be worn for safety reasons.

P.E. is part of the curriculum and it is important for children to remember to come ready with their P.E. kit on the appropriate day. In PE this half term we are concentrating on tag rugby and cricket. We are lucky to have Balla continue to teach the children new skills each Wednesday and we also have martial arts sessions in the second half of spring term.

Homework:

Homework is handed out every Monday and is handed in on Thursday. Year 6 children should read nightly, for just 20 minutes per day is proven to positively impact attainment. It really is an important part of homework and we do ask that parents actively engage with their child's reading to help support them. The children should also practise their spellings and ensure they can confidently recall times tables facts. In year 6 we encourage the children to be independent and responsible for the completion and handing in of their homework – this is great preparation for secondary school life. Links for Spelling Shed and TT Rockstars are at the bottom of the page. Their logins are recorded in their homework diaries as reminders.

Reminders:

  • Children should arrive at school at 8:45am.
  • Children need to bring a coat, a water bottle (containing water), a bag, a healthy breaktime snack (if they wish - fruit or a cereal bar), their homework and a packed lunch if needed. There is no need for personal pencil cases or any other unnecessary items.
  • Children should have PE kit in school every Tuesday and Wednesday. This can be left in school.

Please check Classdojo for updates. The best ways to contact me are via my school email, through Mrs Graham in the office or a note sent in with your child in their homework diary etc.
